So I've done this type of photo transfer before but using wax instead of modge podge when I was doing encaustic once in class. So I was instantly interested in doing the same kind of transfer onto wood using modge podge as the medium and luckily it works quite wonderfully!
So what you do is take a piece of wood(or apparently tile but I've never tried that myself) and paint a layer of modge-podge across its surface then place your already printed picture, ink side down and smooth out all the air bubbles using a bone folder or a pencil. Let it dry over night or for a few hours to make sure it's really dry and then get the paper wet and using the pad of your fingers begin to rub the paper away as shown above. You'll slowly reveal the image on the wood as you go and that part is the most fun I think! After you have all the paper wiped away seal it with any varnish you prefer, I just used a simple matte finish sealant from Michaels, worked like a charm to protect the image!
So all these photos aren't great because there is some sun-glare going on in them but hopefully you get the idea well enough that it works and it looks very nice! This first picture is from Senior prom a few years ago of me and Whit.
None of these pictures were in black and white to begin with so I just changed them in my photo editor because I thought that the black and white would probably show up best on the wood. The top one is of me and my mama and the lower one is of me and my dad at the beach when I was a baby, so cute!
Holy crap this is so cool! I wish I could do something like this...soooo not crafty!
ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised! It so not difficult to manage and the results make you feel like a craft genius! I say give it a try and you're not out much if it doesn't work! ;)
DeleteI'm having trouble getting the copy to stay on the wood. Am I not putting enough modge podge on?
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely important to put a solid thick layer of Modge Podge on the wood and then secondly you have to make sure that everything isCOMPLETELY dry before you start rubbing everything off with the water because it needs to completely adhere to the wood in order for the picture to show well. Hope that helps! :)
